Although there are many things that come to mind when we speak of a woman's call to Biblical Womanhood, key words are definitely honor and dignity.
I knew I wanted today's post to be from the book of Esther, I didn't envision the focus would be on Vashti. When I read Chapter One I noticed the response to Vashti's dishonorable act. The reprimand was more focused on the impact of Vashti's action than the action itself. The following passage shows concern about Vashti's influence on the women who learned of her behavior.
For the queen's action will become public knowledge to all the women and cause them to despise their husbands and say, 'King Ahasuerus ordered Queen Vashti brought before him, but she did not come,' Before this day is over, the noble women of Persia and Media who hear about the queen's act will say the same thing to all the king's official, resulting in more contempt and fury. "If it meets the king's approval, he should personally decree. Let it be recorded in the laws of Persia and Media, so that it cannot be revoked: Vashti is not to enter King Ahasuerus's presence, and her royal position is to be given to another woman who is more worthy than she. The decree the king issues will be heard throughout he is vast kingdom, so all women will honor their husbands, from the least to the greatest."
Just as dishonor is influential so is honor.
A woman is powerful and influential.
In this scenario if Vashti had met the king's request she would have set an example for all the other women to follow. Consider the kings request (Esther 1:10,11), he desired Vashti to be honored at his royal feast by showing off her beauty because he saw her as very beautiful. Sometimes the surface things can seem trivial and the deeper significance is missed. A woman's posture as a model of beauty/glory is not simply external. There is beauty in submission and obedience. There is influence in a woman's ability to humble her and reverently met request. Someone else is always watching and taking cues. The cues will either be encouragement to obey or disrespect. You have the influence to shape nations through parenting, mentoring, and simply being a role model to the watching world. Display your God-given glory through honor and dignity. Help steer the culture around you towards the principles of Titus 2:3-5 and there is no doubt that the world will never be the same.
